Luke is doing amazing. This morning he got taken off his CPAP machine. Such a great feeling walking into the NICU today and seeing his little face looking back at me. Seeing Luke without the tubes on his face and the straps on his head was literally like seeing him for the first time. I never saw his face before they whisked him to off to the NICU when he was born so this was a pretty heart exploding day. He has such a sweet face. We are head over heals for our little guy.
Now instead of the CPAP he is on nasal cannula oxygen. He doesn't love the tube in his nose but he is so much happier now than with the CPAP.
Another big milestone today was that he got his first oral feedings. He is still getting his feedings through a feeding tube but this morning they let Geno give him a really small bottle. He loved it and had polished it off in seconds flat. Tonight was even better because they let me breastfeed him. And he did so great. He is doing so great recently his NICU nurse calls him a little rockstar (might have something to do with his greasy rockstar hair- poor guy still hasn't gotten a bath).
Tonight, more than ever, we really just wanted to bring Luke home with us. His big eyes staring up at us, we swaddle him extra tight in the hope he sleeps until we can get back to him in the morning. All I want to do is sweep him up and run for the door, oxygen tank and all.
With how well he's doing I know we're getting closer to the finish line. We just have to continue at his pace, when we really want to sprint.
It's been one week today but feels like so much longer.
But as I watch new babies and their families join us in the NICU, and feeling so at home in the hospital now, I can see how far we've come. And how much closer we are to bringing Luke home.
