We celebrate the 4th of July at home every year. Our next door neighbors have become the ones we share it with. The dads barbeque, the moms bake desserts, the kids play and stay up past bedtime, and when its dark we set up theater seating in our driveway and Geno and our neighbor Jason take turns lighting off fireworks "for the kids." Which really means for every one sparkler they do with a child they get to blow up 5 fireworks of their own. And its become a little competition for the dads to see who gets the better fireworks each year. Definitely a holiday that brings out the inner little boy.
Early that morning Noah, Geno, and Grandpa went to pick up fireworks.
Think these will out smoke the neighbors?
The boys shopped all morning while I baked and read over my fire extinguisher manual.
When they came back Noah and I made red, white, & blue rice krispie treats.
I added blue food coloring the frosting and before I could mix it up Noah stuck his sticky little fingers in there. He ended up wearing a red shirt that night to patriotically pair with his blue teeth.
My only picture of Max is this one, since he tuckered out and didn't make it outside for fireworks this year. But I did love how in the midst of all the noise and explosions, whenever I would run inside to fetch one of the kids a water or cookie, I would peek in on him and see him cozy and warm, sleeping soundly. With all the craziness that goes on during this holiday, its a warm feeling to have your kids tucked in safe and tight.
Back outside, it was a fun celebration.
Noah spent the first hour like this.
And finished the night with a sparkler.
With a house of boys this holiday will always be a favorite. And my favorite place to celebrate it will always be home. Homemade cooking and treats. Fireworks and sparklers on our own street. A warm bed for little ones that tuck in early. And the fire extinguisher manuel taped on the fridge.
