Class Clown.

This Kid...

(look mom I have bugs in my teeth!)
DSC00066

I picked him up from school and he informed me that his teacher separated him and his two friends so that they would play with the other kids in their class, not just each other.
I said, "It's nice to get to know the other kids in your class. Did you make any new friends?"
"Nope." he replied.
"I told  Mrs. ___(the teacher)....
We don't talk to strangers."

And then he smiled.

Pretty sure this kid added his name on the ballot for the
Class Clown.

Please,
don't vote for us.

First Day { Pre-K }

Today was Noah's first day of Pre-K.

There was resistance.
 Sadness.
 Wanting to stay home.

For me.
He, on the other hand,
ecstatic.

noah swims!

Noah learned to swim in one short summer.
My family kept telling me how great he was doing, but I sadly, wasn't able to witness it for myself.
In fact, I hadn't been up to the pool since week 2
(when Max not-so-gracefully bowed out of his lessons).
Balancing Luke in the shade while keeping Max from running into the pool full throttle proved to be a little too much for this mama, so we stayed home.
Lucky me, Geno snuck away briefly from work today so I could go watch Noah in action!
I was really excited to get to watch my boy swim today,
especially being sans baby entourage.
Really, the morning was enough for me just spending some one-on-one time with Noah.
I can't tell you how proud I am of this kid and all that happiness he brings to our life.
I shot a few short videos today so the rest of the family can see what a little fish he has become.
Our own Noah Phelps in training.
What this kid lacks in size he more than makes up for in spirit and determination.
This first clip is him doing head bobs.
I love this moment captured because he looks at me after every time he comes up for air
(and my heart swells).
He was so excited to have me come watch him today.
And having him look my way each time
is one of the best feelings as a mom.
(Also love his instructor Peter casually at the end of this clip saying, "what is that, like 30 Noah?"
Peter is pretty proud of him too.
This next one he is doing a torpedo and swimming to Peter.
Here he is swimming all the way to the rope. Awesome.
Go Noah, go.
As the saying goes,
being a parent is like deciding to forever have your heart
go walking around outside your body.
Every time I re-watch these clips,
my heart does a little cheer.
And currently Noah is requesting viewing #85.
High-five little super star.

baking with my boy.

IMG_2245
Noah loves to bake with me. He really fills the shoes for not having a little girl in this household. This morning he wanted to bake muffins. We had blueberries but were lacking most of the other vital ingredients... and I only had one egg left. But his eyes were big and hopeful and a swift search of the internet showed  that I had most of the ingredients for a recipe and the rest... we were going to wing it. It was 7 am and we baked in our jammies. It was a sweet morning for us and so much fun. Since I didn't expect our muffins to be perfect, it was easy to let go and not care when he missed the bowl entirely pouring in the ingredients. After we were done, he retreated to cartoons and me to my coffee.
I secretly took a bite of one of the warm muffins when they were cooling, choked on the chalky center and then quietly disposed of them. I  searched the fridge and added blueberry greek yogurt to the mix. The next batch, by the grace of God, turned out perfect, like blueberry cobbler muffins. Yum.
"What is taking our muffins so long to bake?" I heard mumbled over Curious George several times. But he loved his muffins when they were done. And I would have loved this morning with my boy even if all the muffins were all tossed in the end.
But chalk muffins are what would have been served if you stopped by at 7 am this morning.
So moral of the story,
don't come by before 8.

Do you know the muffin man? (He is kind of a violent baker)

airplanes.

IMG_2085
{noah & luke in their airplane jammies}

Last night we were reading a book about airplanes. This led to a conversation about where we wanted to go for our first plane ride as a family. Noah chimed in that he wanted to go with his cousin to Disneyland to see Mickey Mouse. I asked him if there was anywhere else in the world he would want to visit and he replied,
 "To visit Sponge Bob."
Hmm...
"Sponge Bob?" I asked.  "That lives in the pineapple under the sea?" (like there is more than one Mr. Squarepants. but I wanted to see where he was going with this).
"Yes." he said casually, flipping through his book. "He lives there with the crab."
"So....you want to take a plane ride into the sea?"
"No mom." he answered. "Not into the sea. "We take the plane. LAND. Then we SCUBA DIVE to Sponge Bob.
It will be me, you, dad, and Max."
Wait..." (he pauses, deep in thought) "How the heck is BABY LUKE going to get down there?"

Thoughts on 4.

This is the look Noah gave me when I cancelled a playdate with one of his little buddies,
because I am sick. If looks could kill.
The stick sword added an extra menacing touch to drive his point home.

Dates With Noah

Day dates with Noah are treasured. I get to hear his thoughts and stories with undivided attention. And they are hilarious. There's no diaper bags to lug around. And we can go anywhere we please. We usually end up at Starbucks.

A tall apple juice for him

A decaf americano for me.

(Noah took above picture. He's pretty good, as long as you relocate yourself in where you think the camera is going to end up focusing).

Today we went to the bookstore near us that is closing. With hopes of discounted books for him and cookbooks for me.
DSC00047
He found the discounted leggos instead.
DSC00051
After making his selection we headed to the cookbook section of the store. Where after a mere 60 seconds of browsing he came down with a sore throat. And  maybe a cough (cough, cough). We better get home, he sighed.
Miraculously, he recovered by the time we left the store.

FROZEN DREAM

{I'll take the dream I had last night
And put it in my freezer,
So someday long and far away
When I'm an old grey geezer,
I'll take it out and thaw it out,
This lovely dream I've frozen,
And boil it up and sit me down
And dip my old cold toes in."}
— Shel Silverstein (A Light in the Attic)
Noah. You at 4, I wish I could freeze in time. You are the sweetest boy I have ever known and I wish I could keep you this age, always. Your mornings are bright eyed and you are always excited for the day. You overflow with I loves Yous and I'll Miss Yous whenever we part ways. You love your dad. And the times you sit together and play legos for hours. Always followed by, "thank you daddy for playing with me", which makes our hearts explode. You are kind to your brother, as much as a big brother can be. And I would never ask for anyone but you, to lead this boy club of 3. You still love to be hugged. And cuddled when you're tired or sad. And I hope this stays the same, even just one year more. You are all boy, with a love for robots, transformers, and legos the most. And are ever so patient with me, as I fumble along through this new world of toys. You at 4, are a constant smile. I couldn't ask for better days then the ones spent with you. These next few years it will be a challenge, trying to navigate 3 boys. But you at 4, you are making it a breeze. Still smaller than others at 4, I think you carry the biggest light. Love you today, tomorrow, and always. And bottling up for the rainy days, how much I adore you at 4.

Allergies

At the crack of dawn this morning Noah and I trekked up to Seattle to see an Allergy
Specialist. Having more sinus infections in his short 4 years of life than most have in a lifetime,
Noah's pediatrician thought allergies were the culprit. So off we journeyed, 2 hours early, car
packed with movies and snacks for Noah and 5 recopied pages of directions for me.
A good navigator, I am not, and driving somewhere I've never been gives me serious anxiety.
But after we made it, a rediculous 45 minutes early, I was able to use that extra time to re-focus
my nervous energy into the series of pokes I knew he was going to get
for his allergy testing.
I'm a pediatric nurse. It's my job give kids shots and ruin their days.
But I've learned over the years that kids who are prepped before the shots usually do better.
Prepped and bribed, ideally.
Consequently, whenever a new nurse came into our room Noah stated,
"can you please give me my shots now so I can go get some new leggos?"
Totally exposed my plan to all.
Noah was a champ though it all. No tears at all through a series of 30 little pokes.
So proud of my tough little guy.
And much thanks to Ipod Apps. In the 15 minutes after the testing,
as his little arms swelled, welted, and burned,
the games Geno downloaded the night before were just enough to keep him
from clawing his arms off.
His favorite game was one where you slingshot kitties into space.
Clearly not one I downloaded, thanks.
Cats though, he was not allergic too so let's get back to that.
Here's my little buddy right before the injections with all the numbers on his arm.
"That's fun that you're writing on my arm with markers," he told the nurse.
(That one's coming back to haunt me at a future coloring session,
I'm sure).
DSC00177
After the injections, you sit and wait to see what your body's response is. If you are allergic to an allergen, a welt will appear where the serum injection was done. The size of the welt is correleated to how strong your immune response is.
Here were Noah's biggest allergies.
DSC00181
DSC00187
Trees (pollens) and grasses. These were all 4/5 responses, so pretty significant allergies. Our two options for treatment were to quarantine ourselves into a bunker like they do on Lost or put him in a giant bubble suit when he goes out to play. Seriously, there is no real way to avoid trees and grass in Washington. The Dr was incredibly helpful though and tweaked his current medication routine and taught me some other ways to help lessen the effects of the allergies. He pointed out that if Noah was going to be an outdoor kid and play T-Ball he would probably need allergy shots in the future. But if he was going to be a "nerd and on the computers all day" (his words) he might be able to skip it. Normally I would have made a joke here and sided with the t-ball kid, but I had done my homework on our Dr and read his bio before the visit. Stating he had a "strong love for computers" and "making his own glass paper weights", I politely answered either the t-ball kid or the computer nerd was OK by me. I think this was the right answer because next he told me a code word for how I could call and ask him questions directly and by-pass the nurses. And then he spent 5 minutes hunting down a lollipop for Noah. I think the Allergist and I are going to be great friends.
DSC00182
Here's something else. When I was on the Allergy and Asthma's website today I saw they had their own jokes page. Thinking I would find something amusing for the blog, instead, I found these gems:

Old Song Title: Blowin’ In The Wind by Peter Pollen Mary
Humans and bees have something in common – hives!
Another way to say that medications for allergic diseases are expensive: Robbing Peter to pay for Pollen
I really hope our Allergist didn't write these or our short period as best friends may have already come to an end.

Meet My Doula

{Doula: someone who provides non-medical support during pregnancy/labor}.
My doula is this baby's #1 fan.

DSC00024
He tells him he loves him, gives him kisses, and tells us he hopes he comes out today. He felt the same about Baby Max before realizing that once he was out, he couldn't be put back in.
Regardless, I undoubtably have the best doula in town.
